Paul Cook is unboxing the G By Freefall Apparatus and Timer from the guys at EduLab running through the components that make up this unit and what it can be used for in schools. The apparatus consists of an electromagnet housed in a plastic moulded case supplied with a heavy steel sphere, an electromagnet unit with connections for an external timer, and a platform unit containing a microswitch and terminals for the external timer.

00:00:09,583 –> 00:00:15,283
Hello. My name is Paul Cook and
in this LaBLiFe activity we’re
2
00:00:15,283 –> 00:00:21,543
going to look at the G by free
fall apparatus. So if you
3
00:00:21,543 –> 00:00:27,803
open the box and we get our
4
00:00:28,463 –> 00:00:35,963
pieces out. We can see here
that we’ve got a millisecond
5
00:00:35,963 –> 00:00:38,483
timer.
6
00:00:44,543 –> 00:00:50,363
We’ve got our main lead. So I’m
going to plug that in.
7
00:00:59,263 –> 00:01:02,683
Switch it on.
8
00:01:05,003 –> 00:01:11,903
We’ve got our solenoid here.
9
00:01:14,783 –> 00:01:18,923
Got a bar that we can screw on
and then we’re going to put
10
00:01:18,923 –> 00:01:26,563
that into the retort stand and
clamp that I’ve got here.
11
00:01:30,463 –> 00:01:42,063
Your connecting lead So we
connect that to the side here.
12
00:01:42,703 –> 00:01:47,323
And that goes straight into the
unit. So we’ve got two sockets
13
00:01:47,323 –> 00:01:53,003
here. One goes to the stopping
plate and one goes to the
14
00:01:53,003 –> 00:02:01,603
solenoid. So it’s as simple as
connecting the lead in there.
15
00:02:02,683 –> 00:02:09,883
Straighten the lead out a
little bit. And then in here
16
00:02:09,883 –> 00:02:14,643
Last important thing, you’ve
gotta have a ball bearing.
17
00:02:14,643 –> 00:02:17,443
Okay.
18
00:02:22,083 –> 00:02:25,663
Stopping plate.
19
00:02:28,223 –> 00:02:31,203
There we go.
20
00:02:33,123 –> 00:02:40,083
And it’s sprung loaded So it
will trigger every time the
21
00:02:40,083 –> 00:02:46,123
ball bearing lands on it and
then it will reset itself. So
22
00:02:46,123 –> 00:02:50,363
with this lead we’re going to
put it into the socket marked
23
00:02:50,363 –> 00:02:53,323
stopping plate.
24
00:02:59,043 –> 00:03:10,983
Now I’ll switch the unit on.
And we’ve got a button here
25
00:03:10,983 –> 00:03:15,543
called ball and ball release
and then another one here to
26
00:03:15,543 –> 00:03:22,623
reset. So, if I put the ball
bearing there, it should be
27
00:03:22,623 –> 00:03:31,283
energized which it is. Now,
what we can do we can put the
28
00:03:31,283 –> 00:03:38,223
stocking plate on here. And I’m
going to loop the leaves out of
29
00:03:38,223 –> 00:03:43,583
the way. So they’re not
going to interfere with the ball
30
00:03:43,583 –> 00:03:55,223
dropping. Now, what we need is
a half metre rule on this
31
00:03:55,223 –> 00:03:58,903
retort stand. We need to know
the distance between the
32
00:03:58,903 –> 00:04:02,663
solenoid and the stopping
plate.
33
00:04:03,183 –> 00:04:10,443
Now depending on how tall your
ritual stand is you could use a
34
00:04:10,443 –> 00:04:16,043
meter or or if you put it over
the side of the desk and have
35
00:04:16,043 –> 00:04:19,283
the stopping plate on the floor
and obviously you can get a
36
00:04:19,283 –> 00:04:24,163
much greater height on the drop
of the or bearing. But it’s as
37
00:04:24,163 –> 00:04:29,483
simple as pressing the ball
release.
38
00:04:30,683 –> 00:04:41,103
And then we have our time. And
you can reset press the reset button.
39
00:04:42,303 –> 00:04:49,843
Put the ball bearing back up.
Release.
40
00:04:50,843 –> 00:04:55,703
What you should do is you take
three readings
41
00:05:00,303 –> 00:05:03,403
Do it again.
42
00:05:04,303 –> 00:05:08,203
And they’re our three winners.
