Meet LaBLiFe Ambassador – Emma Dent

Name: Emma Dent

Job Title: Principal Specialist Technician (just a posh name for a senior science technician, I am not posh!)

Organisation: St John Henry Newman Catholic School, Carlisle, Cumbria

Years of Experience:5 years as the senior technician

What’s the most enjoyable part of your job?

Every day is so different. I can’t really call it a job as it’s fun and you get to be so creative. I mean one day I was collecting bromine and chlorine gas and the next I was asked to make 30 giant sperm!

What practical do you enjoy doing most?

There are so many but I love the chemistry practicals, especially using tollens reagent to create a silver mirror. Oh and electrolysis, the kids love seeing copper forming on the carbon rods and the gases coming off.

If you had one bit of advice for someone looking to get into your professions what would it be?

Don’t be scared. Just do it. You are going to love it. There is not another job like it. And learn to say “No” early on, I was not very good at this when I started and to be honest I’m not much better at it now.

Who’s your favourite scientist and why?

Paul Ehrlich (1854-1915).

He was the founder of Chemotherapy, without him I wouldn’t be here. And all the other scientist who followed in his footsteps.

What is something only a few people know about you?

I prefer the dark and love reading horror stories.

What is it about your industry that inspires you?

That we are here to inspire the younger generation.
