How To Demonstrate Water Tension

Elements are held together in different ways and the properties of chemical compounds are determined by the bonding between atoms and the attractive intermolecular forces between molecules.

You will need:

      • A plastic bottle
      • Netting from onions
      • An elastic band
      • Cocktail sticks

    Method:

    1. Fill the empty plastic bottle with water just over half.
    2. Tip a little water out (just to show it comes out).
    3. Place netting over the top of bottle ( netting needs to be pulled over top) and secure with elastic band (tip a little water out to show water can go through netting).
    4. Place hand over the top of the bottle tight and turn bottle upside down with hand still covering top of bottle.
    5. After a few seconds take hand away and the water should stay in the bottle.
    6. You can then put cocktail sticks through the netting and the water should stay in the bottle.
