Behind the Prep Room Door at Repton School

In this series, we unlock the door to the science department’s concealed treasure, as science technicians across the UK and Ireland, and now the world, reveal their preparations, setup, and valuable techniques for an efficient prep room.

This month’s prep room is proudly showcased by Senior Science Technician Sureja Anil and Physics Science Technician Priya Renjith from Repton School in Dubai! Repton School offers an outstanding UK curriculum with boarding facilities and has been rated the best for 10 consecutive years by the KHDA of Dubai’s school inspection team. The school boasts world-class amenities, excellent health and safety policies, and provides top-quality education for students of various nationalities. Their curriculum includes IGCSE, IB, A Levels, and BTech. They cover educational programs for Key Stage 3 (KS3), Key Stage 4 (KS4), A Levels, and the International Baccalaureate (IB).

How would you describe your prep room set-up and layout?

Classrooms and prep rooms are differentiated, and access to classrooms is straight from prep rooms. This is the best layout in UAE schools. Technicians have a working office and a prep room, and there are access doors to enter the classroom from the prep room. Lab work and classwork seating are well planned in such a way that technicians can deliver the lab and clear the lab at any time while the class is going on without disturbing the teaching. I highly recommend this style of layout.

What is your favourite part of your prep room?

My favourite part of the prep room is the well-organised storage facilities, spacious working areas, effective office ventilation, easy accessibility to all rooms, peaceful and uninterrupted environment, and the focus on health and safety in the preparation areas.

What is needing some TLC or improvement in your prep room?

A well-being room for technicians’ meetings, chill-out discussion areas for relaxation, where they are free to catch up over coffee.

With that in mind, what would you add to your prep room if you had an unlimited budget?

Add a pantry space and a room for meetings to the prep room.

What is your top tip, advice, or essential must-have for someone setting up or inheriting a prep room?

Ensure your workspace is spacious with ample storage, prioritising health and safety without compromise. Optimal ventilation and lighting are key for productivity.
