Pro-technician and LaBLiFer, Paul Cook demonstrated the AQA Required Practical 10a: Preparation of an organic solid and a test of its purity with his Y13 Chemistry A-level students at Ark Burlington Danes Academy.

This practical is the preparation of an organic solid and test of its purity, in this case, the preparation of a sample of aspirin.

The sample is prepared in Part 1 and Part 2 and the aim of  Part 3 is to test the purity of an organic solid by measuring its melting point.

Part 3 equipment list that Paul used is:

  • Sample to test (Prepared in Part 1&2)
  • Melting point apparatus
  • Capillary tube
  • Safety glasses
  • Disposable gloves
